Acne and Pimples

Acne, one of the most common skin problems that affects humanity. You've had pimples at least at one point in your life. Most of us get them during our teenage years when our hormones are becoming unstable. 75% of teenagers (that's 3 out of 4) are affected by acne of some form. The severity of the acne can be quite different. Some people (the lucky ones) have a pimple every now and then, others will remain scarred for life. This article will attempt to answer several acne-related questions. Even in the 21st century there are many unanswered questions regarding acne. Millions are spent each year on acne product development, but most of these don't actually work.

Can I get acne if I am not a teenager?

Yes, definitely. Any time hormonal imbalances occur could initiate an acne break-out. You may have heard of pregnant women suddenly seeing acne on their skin. Other than pregnancy, quite a few ladies notice an increase in pimples during the menstrual cycle. And people with stressful lives are often affected by acne.

My friend says genetics plays a role in how much you are affected by acne, is this true?

Most likely. There is no definite evidence, however, as with research on other skin problems a genetic link seems highly probable.

Should I wash myself more often to prevent acne?

Good question that is often asked. Hygiene plays quite a small role in acne outbreaks. The notion that those that suffer from acne are somehow not taking care of themselves is incorrect. With that said, keeping your skin clear of debris (deep-cleaning your pores) does have a positive effect on acne prevention.

I thought acne only appears on your face, but I have it on my back too!

Back acne is quite common. The upper back between your shoulders is often the playground of acne. Pimples can also appear on your chest and upper arms. Acne is definitely NOT restricted to just your face.

The products they sell in most stores are too harsh on my skin. Are there natural remedies?

Yes. Thousands of people have seen a decrease in pimples by using tea tree oil treatments. Another good way to clean your pores is to take a steam bath. A mild natural scrub once or twice a week will remove dead skin cells, which will unblock your pores.

I just love chocolate but my mum says it causes pimples!

The link between chocolate and acne has never been scientifically proven. However, we cannot ignore the many reports of people seeing an increase in pimples after consuming chocolate. If you think a certain food is affecting your acne situation then you will need to keep a close eye on your dieting habits.
